There are not very many situations where women will voluntarily talk about money. We come up with all kinds of reasons in our minds why money is a forbidden subject.

Based on my experiences talking with many women, here are the most popular reasons (excuses) why women don’t talk about money:

  1. My parents never talked about money with me, and they seemed to do just fine (substitute your family history).
  2. I am not educated enough – they never taught me about money in school (other than how to count it).
  3. Followup to #2 – I’m embarrassed to talk about money because I don’t know enough about it.
  4. My husband takes care of all that – I don’t need to talk about it (a man is not your financial plan!).
  5. Talking about it may look like I am obsessed with money (that’s not cool).
  6. I have no money!!!  Why in the world would I want to talk about it?
  7. Talking about money just reminds me of all my debt – that’s a big downer.
  8. Followup to #3 – I definitely do not want to look dumb.
  9. But I do talk about money!  (At least when it comes to shopping and store sales.)
  10. It’s kind of not feminine to talk about money, isn’t it?
  11. If I ignore my deteriorating financial situation long enough, things will get better, won’t they?
  12. There are so many more fun things to talk about -  like my kids, fashion, home decorating, my favorite TV shows (substitute your fun stuff)!
  13. I really don’t care about money – as long as no one restricts my spending, I’m good.
  14. Maybe I would talk about money, if someone would just help me become more confident in my money decisions.

If you see yourself anywhere on this list – please stay tuned for the followup post on Why Women Need To Talk About Money.
