Women in Management rock.  The local chapter of Women in Management Inc. in Sheboygan, Wisconsin is one of the best things to happen for professional women in my area in a very long time.

Here are some of the reasons why working women should belong to a professional women’s group:

Women Want Professional Growth

Women in Management is dedicated to the professional growth, development, and success of women managers and entrepreneurs.    Women in Management accomplishes this through monthly meetings with educational speakers on a variety of topics.   Women want education, and studies have shown women prefer to learn in a group with their peers.

I can personally attest to the professional growth I have experienced through our meetings, and also by serving on the local and executive boards of Women In Management. As they say in the commercials, it’s priceless.

Women Need To Network

Men have instinctively known for a long time the value of a good old boy’s network. While women certainly value their close friendships, they are just starting to learn the value of networking with each other professionally.   Some women need to be taught how to network, and a professional group can do just that.

Women Enjoy Helping Each Other

Some very amazing things will happen when women help and support each other. A woman on our local Women in Management board lost her job last year due to a company closing.  Since our area has a high concentration of manufacturing jobs, we have been hit very hard in the recession.

Due to her contacts within Women in Management, her obvious abilities, and some judicious phone calls by a few members, she had a new position within 6 weeks of losing her job. It’s ingrained in women to be helpers, and it’s about time we do it for each other on a professional as well as a personal level.

Women Have Vision

Women get the bigger picture of a better tomorrow, and are willing to work to make it happen.  The vision is way beyond all of us individually, and even our local group.  One of the ways women can do this is to do charitable work, and a professional group can provide these opportunities.

I put out the call this week at our Women in Management meeting for volunteers to help with our local United Way drive. I had four women say they would be glad to help immediately.  And that’s one of the many reasons why I love Women In Management.

I encourage you to look for a professional women’s group in your area. For women in Wisconsin, we have seven chapters located anywhere from Sheboygan to Ripon-Green Lake to Fox Cities to Green Bay.  Check out the new Women in Management website for chapter locations and membership requirements.  Or feel free to call or email me for more information.
